Seasonality of zooplankton communities in the Hudson Bay system

چکیده

The strong seasonality of sub-Arctic seas needs to be considered understand their ecosystems. Hudson Bay system undergoes seasonal changes in 1) sea ice conditions, alternating between complete cover winter and open water summer; 2) river discharge, which peaks the spring influences stratification bay; 3) surface circulation that consists a weak double gyre summer cyclonic autumn. Recent studies included data collected during have shown annual primary productivity is higher than previously reported. Similarly, regional zooplankton assemblages been studied mostly late summer, possibly leading an underestimation secondary production. Here, we use five one six week-long expeditions CCGS Amundsen 2005 2018 describe mesozooplankton investigate how it depends on environmental variables. In general, small pan-Arctic boreal copepods such as Microcalanus spp., Oithona similis Pseudocalanus spp. dominated assemblages. From relative abundance Arctic-adapted Calanus hyperboreus glacialis decreased, while proportion Acartia increased. day year break-up date explained most variation Physical processes species distribution spring, lack lipid-rich autumn, especially coastal regions, suggests some top-down control. This season contrasts with other seasonally ice-covered seas. More are needed fully implications these dynamics under climate change, but this study establishes baseline against future can compared.

Investigating the density and frequency of zooplankton in the Southeastern Basin of the Caspian Sea (Gorgan Bay)

Zooplanktons have an important role in food chain of the aquatic ecosystems, which acts as a food chain link between producers (phytoplankton) and higher nutritional levels. The purpose of this research was to identify and study the zooplankton density in the southeastern basin of the Caspian Sea (Gorgan Bay). Sampling was performed seasonally and samples were collected by zooplankton net (36 c...

Composition, Abundance and Seasonality of Zooplankton in Mida Creek, Kenya

Samples were collected monthly at four fixed stations in Mida creek from May 1996 to April 1997, in order to determine the species composition, abundance and diversity of phytoplankton and zooplankton collected with 20and 332-μm mesh size plankton nets respectively. Sampling also included measurement of salinity and temperature. Peaks in phytoplankton abundance occurred in May and January, foll...

Teleconnection between the Arctic Oscillation and Hudson Bay river discharge

[1] Rising surface air temperatures in response to anthropogenic forcing are intensifying the global hydrologic cycle. Some of the more dramatic signs of climate change are increasing precipitation, evaporation, and freshwater discharge in continental river basins draining to high-latitude oceans. At regional scales, however, an acceleration of the hydrologic cycle is not always detected. In co...
